COLMAN CUTS THE MUSTARD

-

THIS week’s entertainment news has been like catnip to fashion followers.

Awards season is my optimum frock gazing time – from the BAFTAs to the Brits and finally, the ultimate lovey ceremony, the Oscars, where designers clamber to dress the rich and famous and millions of dollars worth of diamonds are loaned to the nominees.

I often wonder who buys all that expensive jewellery given that famous people all seem to borrow theirs?

By now you will all know that the wonderfully British Olivia Colman not only took home the award for Best Actress, she also earned the title of first person to blow a raspberry at the Academy Awards, earning her own Meme in the process.

The fact she wore Prada kind of comes second place.

However, the best dresses weren’t just on the red carpet. The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have been on a three-day Royal tour of Morocco and everywhere you look there are images of Meghan seemingly showing off her “show-stopping maternity style”.

Word on the street is this A-lister isn’t letting a sevenmonth bump get in the way of a bit of glamour. She kicked off proceedings in a scarlet bespoke Valentino Cape dress, wowed in a blue Carolina Herrera maxi dress and saved the best for last with an ivory Dior gown-kaftan hybrid.

The dresses were stunning, and the Duchess was – as always – polished to perfection.

However, the bump cradling was nowhere to be seen, with the mum-to-be appearing less confident, her smiles appearing more vulnerable.

For most women the last trimester is tough. The neat football-size bump is more widespread, ankles swell, thighs chafe (just me?) and dressing up gets tricky. Despite her huge wardrobe budget and team of assistants, I felt for the Duchess standing on the world stage at over seven months pregnant, photographed from every angle and under immense scrutiny.

Maybe even royal brides would rather be at home in their PJs! ■ Joanne is a stylist and personal shopper with more than 16 years’ experience in the fashion industry. Email: Joannecwatkinson@me.com
