Police and uni probe ‘race hate’ video claim
A viral video showing alleged racial abuse and an egg attack against black students in Newcastle is under investigation.
Footage of the incident at Manor Bank student accommodation was uploaded to social media on Wednesday last week.
The short video clips show a group walking past the student flats being subjected to verbal abuse.
In one video, a woman can be heard shouting “you’re not from here, f**k off” on at least two occasions. Another clip features allegations a woman pelted the group of black students with an egg before firing the volley of verbal abuse.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of the video in question and are continuing to work with the university to establish if any criminal offences have taken place.
“Some of those involved in the video have already been spoken to by officers but the victims have not yet reported the incident to police and we would encourage them to contact us on 101.
“There is absolutely no place for racial abuse in our society and it is something we will always take very seriously.”
The alleged attackers are reportedly students at Northumbria University.
A spokesperson for the university said: “The university takes any allegation of hate crime very seriously.
“However, as this matter is currently under police investigation, we are unable to comment further at this stage.”
Unite Students, the providers responsible for the Manor Bank accommodation, said it had been working with the police and university on the investigation.
A spokesperson said: “We would urge anyone with information on this incident to inform the police immediately.”
