NEWCASTLE United trio Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff have been praised by fans who mixed with them during the Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final.

Morpeth Town AFC knocked out Newcastle’s U23s in-front of 1,400 people – which included the United three.

Far from being hidden away at Craik Park, Longstaff, Shelvey, and Dummett took time to talk to spectators, have selfies taken and signing autographs.

Morpeth fan Davina Barclay was one of those who spoke to Longstaff, and praised him for being a ‘true ambassador’ for United and North East Football.

Longstaff arrived at the ground on crutches after injuring himself during Newcastle game with West Ham last weekend. The 21-year-old is to see a specialist this week.

“The lads from Newcastle were great,” Davina told the Chronicle. “Morpeth Town are well supported by the Morpeth Town Juniors and they all had a lot of time for the kids, chatting to them at having selfies taken.

“The Juniors were buzzing to see them at our home ground.

“Sean was great, totally down to earth and stayed well after the game – even though he was on his crutches.

“He was signing programmes and having photos taken. He’s one our own, and that’s how all the kids felt.

“He was happy to chat with everyone and explained about his scan in London. He spent time with the fans and is a true ambassador for Newcastle and North East football.”

Morpeth won thanks to goals from Liam Henderson and Joe Walton, and will now face North Shields in the final at St James’ Park on a date still to be decided.

Having followed Morpeth for the last four years, Davina was over the moon with the result.

“It’s fantastic to see them get to the final for the second year running.

“They’ve had a fantastic season since being promoted and sit towards the top of the table – the final is a great reward for the players and fans.

“I can’t wait for the final. The atmosphere in St James’ Park will be amazing as North Shields will bring plenty of fans too.

“The game against Newcastle with over 1,400 fans on a Tuesday night was amazing, it was a great game of football.”
