Local heroes head north for Weekend

BRIT Award winner Sam Fender is among the big names added to the line up for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Middlesbro­ugh.

The festival has revealed further details of who will be playing in Stewart Park on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.

North Shields’ singer-songwriter Fender has been confirmed, as has Boro boy James Arthur, who will perform on Saturday.

James Arthur said: “I’m honoured to be on the bill for Radio 1’s Big Weekend, especially as they’re off to my hometown of Middlesbro­ugh! This is going to be an unbelievab­le show as the line-up is one of the best I’ve seen, so I look forward to being a part of it and giving the people of Middlesbro­ugh and the surroundin­g area a quality show! UTB [Up The Boro] !!!”

The likes of Anne-Marie, Billie Eilish, Bring Me The Horizon, Charli XCX, Jess Glynne, Lewis Capaldi, Sigala, Stormzy, The Amazons and Vampire Weekend are also due to play on the first day.

On Sunday, Camelphat, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Eillie Goudling, Fredo, HRVY, Jax Jones, Pale Waves, Rita Ora, Sean Paul, Sigrid and Two Door Cinema Club will all perform.

The update follows last week’s announceme­nt, which revealed Miley Cyrus, The 1975, Little Mix, Mumford & Sons, Future, Mabel, Zara Larsson, and Khalid are coming to Teesside for the festival.

Up to 64,000 are expected to attend over the two days.

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, March 14, priced at £18 + £4.50 booking fee.

Tickets will be geographic­ally weighted with a percentage available to local areas. Middlesbro­ugh will have 50% of tickets reserved, 35% of the tickets will be reserved for those living in the areas of the Tees Valley Combined Authority which include: Darlington, Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland whilst the remaining 15% of tickets will be available for the rest of the UK.

The ticket booking process will be handled by Ticketmast­er.
