A KIND-HEARTED neighbour has issued a plea to support a family after their home was destroyed in a blaze.

Flames engulfed the home in The Middles area of Stanley, County Durham, after fire broke out in the upstairs bedroom.

Believed to have been started by a candle, the young family, who wished to remain nameless, have been forced to leave their home because of the damage.

Nearby resident Laura Dixon, 26, was alerted to blaze after her neighbour came running to the door shouting for help.

She said: “We were shocked to discover she was having a house fire. Myself and two others ran to the aid of her and her two children, who luckily enough managed to get out of the property but unfortunately the fire has ripped through the whole upstairs of the house.”

It is understood the fire started in the bedroom, with two fire engines from High Handenhold called to the scene.

Firefighters tackled the fire for around an hour and paramedics were also called to the scene.

Now, Laura is asking the community to help get the family back on their feet and has launched a fundraising campaign.

She said: “It comes with a heavy heart to say they have lost everything.

“They are in need of clothes for her, her partner and their four little kids.

“They need absolutely everything from baby cot things for their children, which they have lost in this devastating situation.”

She said: “I am asking for the help of our community to pull together to give them a little bit to get them by.

“I will be asking for household items once she has found out where she is going, but for now anything will help a little or a lot.”
