A school with a true community outlook

-

WALBOTTLE Campus is a large secondary school and sixth form occupying a beautiful site in the Tyne Valley in the outer west of Newcastle.

This year staff and students have worked harder than ever to support and celebrate the local community.

ACTS OF KINDNESS

Year 10 hair and beauty students organised pamper days as a Christmas treat.

Older ladies and young mothers were invited into school for a range of complimentary beauty treatments, including hair-cutting and styling, nail polishing and hand and arm massages.

In addition, sixth form students organised a senior citizens’ Christmas party for residents of local care homes. Students decorated the main school hall and laid tables for about 100 guests. The event included a buffet lunch and refreshments, a Christmas quiz, bingo and a choir performance, all organised and managed by sixth form students.

IMPROVING OUTER WEST FOR ALL

This year, the school charity the Friends of Walbottle has been raising money to install a 3G multi-sport playing pitch in the grounds of Walbottle Campus, with the aim to create a state-of-the-art sports hub for students at Walbottle and the surrounding communities.

The charity was recently awarded a grant of £30,000 towards the project from the Garfield Weston Foundation and £2,000 from Tesco, and was nominated as one of Lord Mayor Coun David Cook’s chosen charities for his year in office.

It is anticipated it will become home to new rugby league club West Newcastle Magpies RL, established by Newcastle Thunder. The 3G pitch will provide better facilities to local football clubs Walbottle Juniors FC, Throckley Magpies FC, Blue Star FC and West Denton Social FC.

It is hoped that the development will create opportunities for grassroots clubs, local primary schools, charities and other community sports organisations.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In February, Year 10 Walbottle Campus student Morgan achieved a fantastic election victory, gaining the most votes of any candidate in Newcastle to secure seats on the Youth Parliament and the Newcastle Youth Council.

More than 6,300 votes were cast across 16 schools in Newcastle and at a pop-up voting station on Northumberland Street, and as one of 25 young people campaigning to be elected, Morgan had a tremendous victory. As a member of the Youth Parliament and Newcastle Youth Council, Morgan influences decision makers locally and nationally on the issues that matter most to young people in Newcastle.

Headteacher Ms K Lord said: “Walbottle Campus is more than just a school – we’re at the heart of our community. Our vision is for our students to take pride in where they come from, to learn from and respect those around them, and to develop ambition and determination to make a positive contribution to our society.”

The next Walbottle Campus open event for prospective parents and pupils will be on Wednesday, September 25 from 4 to 7pm. For details, visit www.walbottlecampus.newcastle.sch.uk, call 0191 267 8221 or email admin@walbottlecampus.net.
