Chef Gary’s on a mission to win hearts and minds one mouthful at a time
SWEARY, tattooed, straighttalking and also utterly charming, Gary Usher is the best chef you’ve never heard of, and definitely the most rebellious.
“I hate all the fake bu ***** t around restaurants,” he says.
Gary was a school dropout who turned to drug-taking and shoplifting, but turned his life around.
“I thought I was going to be a loser for the rest of my life,” he says.
Now he is a top chef, restaurateur and force of nature.
He’s on a mission to make delicious food that everyone can enjoy, wherever and whoever they are.
Cameras follow Gary as he sets out to open up in a place that – on paper – looks like the worst location to set up a buzzy new eatery.
He says: “My ambition is to open a decent little restaurant in a place that could really do with it.”
And so he heads to Prescot, Merseyside, and an arcade that hasn’t seen a new restaurant in three decades. He hasn’t got the cash, so he’s crowdfunding the £50,000 he needs to build a French-style restaurant.
Gary believes the locals will love his bistro-style food, and is willing to defy the banks, chains and big businesses that ignore Britain’s small towns
