EU there for rich to make money

-

THE EU is not perfect, this is an understatement.

The Neoliberal philosopher Friedrich Von Hayek, a Thatcher guru and advisor, said it was deliberately set up to protect the markets, i.e. capitalism, from any attempts by individual European nations to introduce socialism or any measures which prevent the making of profits.

It is essentially for the rich to make money at the expense of the poor and working people. That is why the banks, corporate finance, the IMF and all big businesses want us back in the EU. There are concerns about too many powers being exercised at EU rather than national level and not a superstate or superpower run by bureaucratic unelected elite; peace and accountability should be its goal.

The EU needs to consider ways to bring about more democracy – such as a Europe

can only be one where national parliaments and voters have their rights restored. If not say NO to the EU.

Tackling issues with parking in our area

YOUR paper reported the parking problem at North Kenton in July. As your news report rightly pointed out, scores of local residents on Hillsview Ave and Carnforth Green experienced problems in parking their cars outside their own properties caused by visitor parking at Kenton Centre.

Thankfully measures to ease the problem outside the Kenton centre have been approved involving a range of partner organisations, including the Council and the health service. The measures include:

■ Extension of the car park at the Kenton Centre to increase by 50% creating more parking spaces for essential healthrelated staff, such as nurses and health visitors. This will be funded by the NNT LIFT Co-Partnership with the health service;

■ Planned changes to street parking approved after a community consultation exercise;

■ The introduction of

‘No Waiting At Any Time’ restrictions, including double yellow lines on Hillsview Avenue;

■ And the introduction of two hours limited waiting between 8am till 6.30pm.

This should help in removing long-term parking and discourage vehicles from parking in nearby streets. Of course a more sustainable long-term solution is needed, but these proposals should help to address the problem. COUN STEPHEN LAMBERT,

Chair, Kenton Committee Thanks to those who joined walk for peace I was delighted to join Hari Shukla and many others on the Newcastle Walk for Peace. At a time when so many leading political figures are seeking to use Brexit to create divisions in our communities, inspirational figures like Hari are so sorely needed to bring us all together in a sense of mutual respect and harmony.

The march gave me an opportunity to meet people from all faiths and to learn that there is more that unites us than divides us, to quote the words of the late Jo Cox MP, who was so sadly taken from us by the forces of hatred and

intolerance. I would therefore like to thank my dear friend Hari and all who participated in this event – particularly those many young people who

give me hope for a brighter future, after the darkness recedes of this Brexit era. COUN ROB HIGGINS, Newcastle City Council
