Struggling Spartans still backing Clark

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans chairman Tony Platten has confirmed the Board’s backing of manager Lee Clark.

It was something of a coup for Blyth when they brought in experienced Football League manager Clark in the summer.

It has been a baptism of fire, however, for the former Magpie with a new-look Blyth propping up the table.

Clark has overseen a run of two draws and nine defeats in 11 Vanarama National League North games.

The 46-year-old had to rebuild the Spartans squad after a mass exodus of players.

Platten said: “I’m a little surprised by our start to the season, it’s a bit strange.

“Pre-season went well with some good results and we were scoring goals, so there were positive signs.

“The step up from the Northern League for some of our younger players has been a big jump.

“Stitching a side together virtually from scratch, was never going to be easy, but we’re bringing in more experienced players now when they are available.

“We remain confident in Lee and his management staff to turn things around.

“We can’t start chopping and changing things and he must be given time to gel the team and get the best from them.

“He has great connections in football which can be very useful to us.”

Both Platten and Clark believe this weekend’s FA Cup tie at Curzon Ashton is a pivotal moment in the campaign.

“Let’s hope for a good FA Cup result, which might kick-start the season and keep the crowd with us,” added Platten.
