INSIDE THE VATICAN

BBC2, 9pm

THIS compelling series gives unprecedented access to the inner workings of the historic Vatican. A place of Popes, choristers, the Sistine Chapel, Christians flock to this holy location.

It has huge religious responsibility but must also keep up with the times.

Pope Francis, pictured above, has Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as a Facebook page, to reach out to people – luckily he has a media team.

We also meet Archbishop Paul Gallagher, originally from Liverpool, who is the Pope’s foreign minister. A jolly character, he plays some ABBA on his record player and complains about the “little problem with seagulls” from his apartment inside the Apostolic Palace.

Filmed in the run up to Easter, it’s a busy time with craftsmen and gardeners working on the upkeep of the place and the Vatican Police Force making stringent security checks.

A lively documentary, with far less quiet contemplation than you might expect.

THE ROB RINDER VERDICT

Channel 4, 10pm

A MASTER of the disapproving look, expert of the eye roll and purveyor of cutting criticism, Rob Rinder, pictured, is the perfect host for a topical comedy show.

Moving on from his courtroom daytime shows, this has seen the criminal barrister-turned-TV personality take a swipe at the news in his own inimitable way.

Sitting behind a desk alongside a panel of celebrity guests and with a studio audience, he seems very happy to be leaving Judge Rinder behind.

Whether it’s a bemused take down of Boris Johnson’s latest outburst, trying to talk in the same vernacular as guest Big Narstie or making Lorraine Kelly swear, it’s entertaining.

“Its my verdict on what’s wrong with the world,” he says.

But he had better lay off Boris in this final episode as his family – Rachel Johnson and Stanley Johnson – is on the guest list. Rob is also joined by the fabulous Joanna Lumley and comedian Tez Ilyas.
