Boss is prepared to play a waiting game as Seagulls fly into the Toon

- By LEE RYDER

STEVE Bruce has warned patience will be the watchword against Brighton and Hove Albion tonight.

The Magpies go into the clash with Graham Potter’s side looking for their first home win of the season - but Bruce is expecting a tricky test against the side which is also under new management this term.

Brighton won the corresponding fixture last season 1-0 at St James’ Park and Bruce knows this could also be a tight affair.

When asked if patience was vital, he said: “That is the key to it.

“They (Brighton) are content to be in possession of the ball whatever area of the pitch they are in.

“We will have to be patient and take our chances.”

Bruce tried to manage the expectations ahead of the clash on Tyneside.

The former Sunderland nd Birmingham City manager added: “We understand the importance of the Brighton game.

“Brighton have had a total change of manager, philosophy and style.

“It will be difficult, they all are in the Premier League, but we are at home and it is a wonderful opportunity to pick up a win.”

Brighton’s Premier League form in 2019 is woeful with just one win in their last 14 matches.

However, Bruce said: “They play similarly to us.

“They play three centre-backs and they are going through that transition.

“They had a wonderful start winning 3-0 at Watford - and they are a bit different under their new manager.

“They are a good side but it is a big opportunity for us too.

“It would be wonderful to gain a result which would give everybody a lift.”
