Shaw is top result as Shields win
JOSH Gillies and Jon Shaw were on target as South Shields maintained their place at the top of the Premier Division table with a 2-0 home win against Gainsborough Trinity.
Former Gateshead and Darlington attacking midfielder Gillies struck just before half-time to give the Mariners a narrow lead at the interval.
The visitors were reduced to ten men on 68 minutes when Ash Worsfold received a straight red card for a poor challenge on Gary Brown.
Their hosts took until injurytime to confirm their win when Shaw doubled their lead after good work from Millenic Alli.
■■SEAHAM Red Star bounced back from their heavy home defeat to Newton Aycliffe by seeing off Heaton Stannington in Group A of the Mitre Sports Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup.
Anthony Myers and Morgan Dart found the net to give Red Star a two-goal lead as half-time approached.
However, a Thibault Charmey penalty reduced the advantage by the time the interval had been reached.
Richard Coulson restored the hosts’ two-goal lead and they held on for a win – despite Jonathan Wright giving the Stan hope with an injury-time strike.

■■FORMER Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard failed to inspire Durham City to only their second win of the season as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Birtley Town.
Bernard was in charge for the the first time as Mark Pattison, Jack Honour, Tony Smith and Aaron McEwan all notched for the Hoops.
