Boss Will not get carried away by Heed’s good run

- By JEFF BOWRON

PLAYER-MANAGER Mike Williamson is not getting carried away by his side’s encouraging start to the season.

Gateshead have lost just two of their 12 games and are through to the next round of the FA Cup.

Four of the last five games have been won, the Heed handed an away trip to Kidsgrove Athletic in the cup.

Williamson’s men have an important away game before then at Altrincham tomorrow.

Gateshead are eighth in National League North just a point outside the play-offs and five points ahead of the Robins.

Williamson is keen to keep everyone fully focused on the job in hand.

He said: “We are still a work in progress and are by no means the finished article.

“It is all about the process, building steadily and continuing to improve, which we are doing.

“To win our last four home games without conceding was excellent and we now face tough away games in league and cup.” Altrincham won their FA Cup replay against Chester in midweek, their third straight win at Moss Lane. Williamson said: “Altrincham try and play good football and get the ball out wide. You can see they have a game plan.

“We have to make sure everyone understands their jobs and we go there and counteract their strengths. “At the same time it is about what we do.

“If we show up and produce the performance levels we have recently we can go there and win.” Captain Scott Barrow is again a doubt, while midfielder Connor Oliver remains sidelined. Williamson said: “Scott has been improving and had a good session on Thursday so we will see how he is.”

Gateshead have so far lost only once on the road, to a last-gasp goal at Hereford.
