Blue Star still shining as unbeaten start continues

LEADERS Newcastle Blue Star continued their unbeaten start to the league season with a 3-2 win over visitors Gateshead Rutherford.

Liam Anderson and Malik Kalimba gave the title hopefuls a two-goal cushion before Joe Turnbull reduced the deficit early in the second half.

Anderson restored Blue Star’s twogoal lead ten minutes later with his second of the game, and with nine minutes remaining Robert Jefferson struck to make for a nervy close.

Blyth Town continued their impressive start to life in the top division with a comfortabl­e 3-0 win at Ponteland United.

Adam Johnson opened the scoring midway through the first half, with Paul Dunn doubling the visitors’ lead five minutes into the second half and Liam Thompson wrapping things up just past the hour.

A goal in each half from hosts Newcastle Chemfica were enough to see off Percy Main. Michael Stevenson got the opener after 32 minutes, and with seven minutes left on the clock Andrew Hall sealed the points with a late second goal.

Two penalties from Alnwick Town’s

Kieran Hogg, one in each half, featured as they won 4-2 at Winlaton Vulcans.

Hogg opened the scoring from the spot in the opening minutes with Kyle Wharton levelling midway through the half.

Brendan Balmbra restored Town’s

lead eight minutes before the break, but with the end of the half approachin­g Craig Rook levelled for a second time.

Jordan Frost edged the visitors back in front six minutes after the restart before Hogg netted again from the spot for the revitalise­d visitors.
