ACADEMY’S ATHLETES IMPRESS FOR THE NORTH AT NATIONALS TRIATHLON
FOR the first time in almost a decade the North East made the podium at the British Triathlon Championships – with Thorp Academy very much part of the region’s success.
The Ryton-based academy’s Joe and Isabel Swanston and Jessica Milburn, with Annabel Milburn a reserve, all contributed at the Mallory Park showpiece in Leicester.
There were several incredible individual races and the North East finished second among a field of 13 regions.
Athletes gained selection for the North East squad at the World Triathlon Series in Leeds earlier in the summer.
The first three finishers were invited to represent the area at the British Nationals.
Twelve athletes competed individually in Leicestershire.
Joe Swanston and Jessica Milburn (both year nine) and Isabel Swanston (year seven) contributed to the team securing the silver medal.
In the relay event the team took third place after an exciting sprint finish.
Joe Swanston and Milburn competed in team two and Jessica Milburn (pictured left) was on team three.
Combining all the scores, the bronze was achieved.
Isabel Swanston said: “It has been ten years since the NorthEast was on the podium and to do it twice in one weekend, what an incredible achievement.
“I am so proud to have been part of the team and to share the success with all of my friends and now I am looking forward to competing in 2020.”
