Changes to street will be Grey day

-

I have been saying for two years now and so have others that our beautiful Grey Street, often named the most beautiful street in the country, has been severely down graded and turned into another Bigg Market.

Our councillors need to walk down there on a weekend night and see what is happening. Our beautiful historic streets are turning into no-go areas.

Mosley/Collingwood streets, now referred to as The Diamond Strip, have also been downgraded and are ever in the press for drugs and violence.

All the money spent recently on The Bigg Market and the place looks filthy already. These area are full of vomit, litter and other unmentionables. The pavements are all stained with drink, food and chewing gum.

Grey Street should have been preserved for high-end businesses, shops, banks and solicitors and the like – not

food and drink, and certainly not pavement bars.

Surely Newcastle City Centre has reached saturation point for bars, restaurants and fast food.

There are many people who now would not entertain going into Newcastle of an evening because of the excessive drinking culture and bad behaviour. It is very intimidating for many.

Very little support is given to police by councillors in refusing more drinking licences.

The cat is out of the bag now and it is very difficult to take back our beautful city. The damage is done!

As for Nick Forbes’ idea of pedestrianising Grey Street, this would just encourage more bad behaviour and would definitely create another Bigg Market culture. Enough is Enough surely.
