A late mistake keeps United in the FA Cup

A LATE goal enabled Newcastle United to progress to the third qualifying round, coming from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers.

The Lady Mags fell behind after only seven minutes, Ceri Ogden drilling home a cross.

Dominyka Podziute produced three good saves to stop the hosts doubling their advantage before the break.

Jayden Maxwell had United’s best chance in the first half, the Bolton goallkeepe­r denying them an equaliser from a rare effort on goal.

Newcastle stepped up a gear after the break, Megan McKenzie shooting over and Imogen Longcake firing wide before Beth Gardener spurned two chances.

The equaliser came after 65 minutes when Gardener crossed for Maxwell to score from six yards.

Podziute was called into action to keep the scores level before the winner came in the 89th minute, courtesy of a goalkeepin­g error.

Rhiannon Gray powerfully struck a free-kick from outside the area, the goalkeeper spilling the ball over the line to put Newcastle ahead.

Chester-le-Street Town beat Doncaster Rovers 4-2.

Nichole Havery slotted home after seven minutes but Emily Burgin levelled for Doncaster ten minutes later.

Rovers then took the lead eight minutes into the second half,, Chloe Bethell firing home, but a handball in the area three minutes later gave the hosts a penalty.

Havery confidentl­y made it 2-2 from the spot and then completed her hat-trick after 68 minutes.

Two minutes later Town made it 4-2, substitute Kacie Elson lobbing the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

A second-half surge allowed Durham Cestria to secure a 5-1 home victory against NERWFL Premier Division Ossett United.

Captain Jennifer Knowles had a half-hour to remember, the right back scoring four times and Chloe Ryan adding the other.

South Shields bowed out of the competitio­n after losing at FA Women’s National League side Leeds United 4-1 despite an early goal from Grace Boyes.

The third qualifying round draw gave Newcastle United a trip to Chester-le-Street Street Town. Durham Cestria are away to Redcar Town or Norton/Stockton Ancients. ■ SUNDERLAND travel to Northern Division Barnsley in the first round of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup on Sunday.

In an all-Northern Division clash, Durham Cestria are at Chorley.
