Day for fans of all ages to show Heed support

- By JEFF BOWRON

TOMORROW is annual Non-League Day – and Gateshead are targeting another four-figure gate at the International Stadium.

The Tynesiders recorded six gates over a thousand last season in nonleague’s top flight.

Despite dropping down a division, they have already managed three this season and average 983 compared to 841 last season.

After a traumatic year under foreign ownership that almost finished the club, the feelgood factor has returned.

Gateshead take on fellow mid-table side Gloucester City at the International Stadium tomorrow.

For Non-League Day, a family ticket for four that includes entry to a pre-match Fun Zone is available for £20.

As for all home league games, Newcastle and Sunderland season ticket holders get a discount of a third off adult admission.

There are other discounts as the club looks to build their fan base as progress is made on the pitch.

The Heed are looking up under former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson with just two defeats from the first 13 games.

Non-league and lower league football is given a higher profile this weekend with no Premier League or Championship games taking place

Williamson, pictured, told The Chronicle: “After everything that happened last season, everyone is pulling together to take Gateshead forward.

“Non-League Day is an another opportunity to showcase the club and then we’ve then got a massive FA Cup tie.” Gateshead host underdogs Colne in the final qualifying round of the Cup next weekend as they bid to reach the first round. The Heed have won their last four home games without conceding and are at full strength tomorrow. They are level on points with Gloucester and have a game in hand of all but one side above them. “We’re stronger than our league position shows,” added Williamson “and we’re not far off the top seven.

“Our recent home form has been excellent and we’ll be looking to maintain that in front of what will hopefully be a good crowd.”
