Whickham hoping for a league win

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

WHICKHAM, currently languishing in 14th place after winning just three of the opening 11 games of the season, side are without a league win since taking all three points from their visit to Sunderland West End in August.

But they did claim another win on Wearside in midweek as they beat Sunderland West End in the Mitre Sports Brooks Mileson League Cup.

A home league game against North Shields is next on the agenda on Saturday.

A knee injury means that league leaders Hebburn Town will be without striker Luke Sullivan for their home game against West Auckland Town.

Whitley Bay manager Nathan Haslam has confirmed that Connor Smith (suspension) and Tom Graham (knee injury) will miss their trip to Sunderland RCA.

Newcastle Benfield will hope to build on last weekend’s impressive win at Ryhope CW and move into the top half of the table with a home win against Northallerton Town and Newton Aycliffe could move into the top four of the table if they claim all three points from their home game against struggling Penrith.

Division Two leaders Redcar Athletic travel to Tow Law Town, where an away win would see the Teesside outfit end the weekend eight points clear at the top of the table as second-placed West Allotment Celtic are in FA Vase action at Bottesford Town.

Ryton and Crawcrook Albion can move level on points with Allotment if they can come out on top in their visit to struggling Washington.

Heaton Stannington will look to stretch their unbeaten run to six league games when Carlisle City visit Grounsell Park and Newcastle University could move as high as fourth place by taking all three points from their game against Bedlington Terriers at Kimberley Park.

Durham City visit Birtley Town and Billingham Synthonia face Esh Winning at Norton Sports Complex.

Easington Colliery visit struggling Brandon United and Sunderland West End will have a new face in their squad for their game at Willington after former Seaham Red Star winger Josh Winthrop joined the club.
