Heed keep marching on with another win

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD’S mean machine is in over-drive as momentum builds at the International Stadium.

A 1-0 win, which should have been more emphatic, over Gloucester City was the Heed’s sixth in seven games.

Mike Williamson’s men have now won their last five games on home soil without conceding a goal.

Only unbeaten leaders, Steve Watson’s York City, have conceded fewer goals than Gateshead in National League North.

The Tynesiders have leaked only nine goals in 14 league and cup games this season.

Next up is a potential banana skin in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup at home to underdogs Colne on Saturday.

The signs are positive both on and off the pitch for Gateshead, following last season’s traumas.

They celebrated Non-League Day with a win in front of a 1,189 -strong crowd, their fourth over a thousand this season.

The Heed Army should have witnessed more goals against the toothless Tigers, who failed to register an effort on goal.

Josh Kayode’s fifth of the season, however, was enough to earn another maximum haul – Gateshead one point from the play-offs.

Player-manager Williamson said: “It was another good afternoon and the result didn’t reflect the game.

“We had four clear-cut chances that we didn’t take and on another day they go in and we win handsomely.

“We only scored the one goal but that was enough for another three points and we defended very well as a team.

“What we worked on all week was the press and defending from the front and we were relentless in that aspect.

“We’ve just got to keep going about our business and continue to be hard to beat.”

Williamson praised teenage goalscorer Kayode, who dispatched Alex Nicholson’s cutback on 17 minutes.

“We decided to take him off midway through the second half because he was on a yellow card.

“He gives us such a presence up top – I wouldn’t like to play against him – and he took his goal well.”
