Bruce will do Al right, says Magpie legend

ALAN Shearer is confident Newcastle United can succeed under Steve Bruce.

However, the legendary No 9 hopes the head coach is backed in the January window to help stabilise the Magpies in the Premier League this term.

United will head to Chelsea on Saturday looking to build on their fantastic 1-0 win over Manchester United before the international break.

When asked about Newcastle’s big win over the Red Devils, and what it meant for Bruce, Shearer said: “I was delighted for him.

“I was delighted for the team, because when you put in a performance like they did (against Leicester), you know you are going to be battered.

“They have had a hammering, and rightly so, but you always have a right to reply as a footballer and football manager.

“If you gain a result like that (against Manchester United) it certainly gives you something to go and build on.”

Newcastle have at least pulled out of the relegation zone after inconsistency threatened to dent the season.

Shearer, speaking at Wallsend Boys Club’s opening of their new all-weather pitch, added: “It has been a mixed bag.

“I mean, there have been poor performances. Norwich away and Leicester away were terrible.

“Then you look at Tottenham and Manchester United.”

Shearer does feel Bruce can continue to turn things around.

He went on: “There is something in there to work with.

“If you can keep the majority of the squad fit they will do all right.

“Then if you look at investment in January, hopefully that will come as well.

“I think it was a huge relief to everyone, including Steve who I was delighted for because he has had to put up with a lot over the last two weeks.” Alan Shearer
