AN INTERIOR designer found himself in the dock after 200 cannabis plants were discovered in his home.

Police officers arrived at Alec Simpson’s home in Leeming Gardens, Gateshead, for a separate matter on July 2.

They smelled cannabis and carried out a search. Officers found more than 200 plants in various stages of growth in the property, as well as £100 in cash and a set of scales.

Simpson, 41, has pleaded guilty to an offence of producing a controlled class B drug.

At South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Glenda Beck said the defendant was interviewed about the matter and he said he did not supply drugs to anyone else. He claimed the cannabis was for personal use for medical reasons.

Paul Hanratty, for Simpson, said the defendant had been diagnosed with a bipolar condition and he intended to use the cannabis himself.

“He is a few days away from his 42nd birthday and this is the first time he has found himself in court,” said Mr Hanratty.

“He has no previous convictions, he is of good character and never been in trouble with the criminal justice system in the past.

“He has had an old business working as an interior designer. He also

designed other artefacts and exhibited them at galleries throughout the country.

“This is a talent, a job which he has taken great satisfaction from.

“Unfortunately he was diagnosed with bipolar.

“He was prescribed medication by his doctor.

“That medication had the effect of slowing him down.

“He found it difficult to be creative.” Simpson researched the matter and felt he could use cannabis to help him, it was said.

“Rather than finding a dealer, he decided he would grow his own,” said Mr Hanratty.

“This was his first attempt. “There are 200 plants. Most of them would not have flowered, most of them would not mature.

“He said he was not a good farmer or gardener.

“He was never going to sell this on. It was purely for his own use.

“This was not a commercial enterprise.

“It was a poor effort and he has learnt his lesson.

“He’s anxious to get back into work.”

Magistrates decided to send the case to Newcastle Crown Court for sentence.

Simpson was given unconditional bail until the next hearing on November 12.
