BEST OF THE REST

-

GIRI/HAJI

BBC2, 9pm

IT’S a bloody start to this Japanese English thriller, named after the Japanese words for duty and shame.

In London, a man is found stabbed in the back, dead on his apartment floor.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a man is eating his rice and noodles before a machine gun opens fire and kills him and several others in the restaurant.

The hero of the tale is detective and family man, Kenzo Mori (Takehiro Hira), who travels to London in search of his younger brother, Yuto (Yosuke Kubozuka) – long believed to be dead, but now rumoured to have reappeared in London.

Yuto is now wanted for a vicious killing in London that threatens a gang war in Tokyo.

The drama jumps between London and a subtitled Tokyo. Watch out for some light relief from Will Sharpe as gregarious rent boy Rodney, and Kelly Macdonald as an ostracized police officer.

These two may prove a help to Kenzo as he searches for the truth.
