MATFEN Hall’s Zara Naughton and Arcot Hall’s Rachel Gourley represente­d England Schools in the Home Internatio­nals at Irvine in Ayrshire.

Naughton, 13 (on right of picture), was paired with Gourley, 15 (on left) in the foursomes against Scotland, which they won 3 and 2.

In the afternoon singles, Naughton fought back from four down to halve her match on the 18th while Gourley won as England beat Scotland 3.5-2.5.

■JAMES Thompson was named Young Volunteer of the Year at the NatWest OSCAs at Lord’s in recognitio­n of his volunteer work at Berwick Cricket Club.

Thompson received his award from England World Cup-winning all-rounder Chris Woakes.

■RACHEL Michie won Linden Hall Golf Club’s Newcastle Breweries Ladies Cup with 31 points - five ahead of runner-up Linda Morris.

■MOUNT E moved into top spot in Division Two of the Northumbri­a Winter Table Tennis League with a 7-3 victory over Ouston B.

Alan Livingston­e was player of the match, winning three games.

■CONSETT and District Sunday League side Blackhall Mill and Chopwell saw hopes of Durham County FA Champions League glory ended when they lost 2-1 at home to Houghton Town.

■WHITLEY Bay and Tynemouth’s Hockey Club’s men’s second team won 6-0 against Gateshead but the thirds lost 5-0 to Hild Bede Firsts.

■NORTH Shields Polytechni­c Athletic Club have been voted club of the year for 2019 by Triathlon England North East Region. A full report on the club’s success will be in Grassroots Sport soon.
