PICK OF THE DAY

- With Sara Wallis

HE was the child superstar who shot to fame after singing Pie Jesu on a This Morning phone-in when she was just 11.

The Welsh opera singer went on to become a global phenomenon, singing all around the world, for popes, princes and presidents.

Now a 33-year-old Charlotte Church lives away from the public eye in a village outside Cardiff, with her musician husband and her two kids.

For the first time since she was a teenager, she has decided to spend time alone with her mum and dad, retired pub owners Maria and James, to explore their relationship.

“They’re a pretty mental bunch,” says Charlotte. “We love each other so much but they’re an absolute pain. They’re like The Twits!”

Cameras follow Charlotte as she takes her parents off to a secluded cabin in the woods in Devon for a few days for some quality time. Charlotte says: “I’d like to explore some old wounds that we’ve all inflicted on each other.”

What follows is a surprisingly emotional tour through the family’s past and present as all the feelings come tumbling out.

Maria reveals that she had a nervous breakdown after Charlotte left home aged 16 after a blazing row – the mum and daughter didn’t speak for over 18 months.

We also learn that James may have just months to live as he is suffering from a rare and terminal illness, AL amyloidosis. Charlotte says: “There’s loads of stuff that I want to say, whether I have the courage to say it or not is another thing.”
