Sheffield squad is making a splash
Newcastle quintet help county’s team to second spot
NEWCASTLE Swim Team members helped Northumberland and Durham secure a creditable second place at the County Team Championships in Sheffield.
Callum Atkinson, Ryan Zhao, Hannah Slater, Amelia Robertson and Lola Davison were part of the squad which helped N and D to its highest placing at the event in 20 years.
NST head coach Ryan Livingstone was delighted with how well his swimmers performed at Ponds Forge Pool.
He said: “This was a great result for the whole Northumberland and Durham team and the NST swimmers were an integral part of this success.
“It is the highest placing achieved by the county in nearly two decades and it shows huge progression from going close to relegation just five years ago.
“The county association has invested heavily in athlete and coach development and we are seeing the results of that.”
Meanwhile, NST’s Junior League team just missed out on qualifying for the Arena Junior Inter-League national final by five points after finishing fifth.
It is the first time the squad had ever qualified for the Northern Final, making it the most successful junior team in the club’s history.
Coach Michele Davison said: ”Some outstanding performances earned Newcastle Swim Team’s 12 and under swimmers a well-deserved first Junior League victory.
“This reflects the commitment, determination and progression of the younger NST swimmers over the past five years since the club was formed.”
