Firm’s View to opening a bar with industrial feel

IT SAYS IT WILL CREATE ‘CALM’ VENUE IN STREET OF SHOPS

AN “urban-style” bar could be opened in the heart of Whitley Bay’s shopping district.

The three-man team behind Square and Compass say it would breathe life into an area of the town they say is “very much in need of investment”.

The micro-bar would be located in the former Jam Gallery unit at the end of Park View.

Last year, Park View got a surprise mention in a Guardian list of 10 of the ‘coolest’ shopping districts on the planet, alongside streets in Paris, Hamburg and Toronto.

Now, a licence application has been lodged with North Tyneside Council to open the nightspot they say would be a “calm and welcoming establishment”.

“Our ethos will be to promote the joys and diversity of local produce, supporting local businesses and employment,” states the application.

“Our style will be a smart urban/industrial style with local nods to the past.”

Developers say the venue would enjoy a full refurbishment ahead of the opening.

However, no opening date – or job numbers relating to the plans – have yet been made public.

The venue would open until 11pm, although the application seeks a possible extension for special occasions, such as bank holidays.

Management say they have been in “very helpful discussions” with locals over the opening times.

And asking for an alcohol and music licence to be granted, NE Safety Group’s application adds: “While we are aware that the premises are in a cumulative impact zone, we are also aware that this part of town is in very much need of investment as a number of premises are standing empty.

“We believe with the granting of this licence application that we can positively enhance not only the building and how it is used by the community but also the characteristic nature of Park View.”
