CIVIC AS WELL AS COMMUNITY REMEMBRANCE EVENTS SET TO TAKE PLACE
THOUSANDS of people will unite this weekend and on Monday to remember and honour those who lost their lives fighting for their country.
Remembrance Day services will be held throughout the region, with commemorative events mainly set to take place on November 11 itself – which is a Monday this year – and tomorrow.
NEWCASTLE Sunday, November 10
War Memorial, Old Eldon Square: Assemble ahead of the Remembrance Day parade, which will set off from back rear of Newcastle Civic Centre at 10.30am to head to Old Eldon Square for a service led by Bishop Hardman at 11am.
Ahead of the date, the scene will be set with around 20,000 knitted poppies which volunteers are asked to help create for display on November 4.
Quayside: The Maritime Volunteer Service usually holds a Remembrance Day Parade of Sail with fleet sailing towards Newcastle and then moving downstream for a wreath-laying stop between the Millennium and Tyne Bridges and a two-minute silence. GATESHEAD Saturday, November 9 Greenside
War memorial at 10.45am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.
Sunday, November 10 Gateshead Centre
Cenotaph, Prince Consort Road. Service will start at 10.45am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and a march past.
Birtley
Leave Birtley Community Centre at 10.30am for Birtley Cenotaph for 10.45am for service and a wreath-laying ceremony. Please note that the Cenotaph gates will be closed at 4.30pm.
Blaydon
St Cuthbert’s Church. Service starts 10.15am followed by service at the War Memorial at noon.
Chopwell
Cenotaph. Service and wreath-laying ceremony. Assemble 10.45am for 11am.
Clara Vale
War Memorial for wreath-laying ceremony. Assemble at 10.45am for 11am.
Dunston
St Nicholas Church at 10am for service then proceed to war memorial for wreath-laying ceremony at 11am. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Church Hall.
Felling
Garden of Remembrance, Felling, at 10.45am for a short service and wreath-laying ceremony at 11am. (If wet, please make your way to St Mary’s Church at Heworth.)
Greenside
War memorial at 11am for a short service.
High Spen
St Patrick’s Church at 9am for service then proceed to war memorial for an Act of Remembrance at 10am.
Kibblesworth
War memorial, Grange Terrace, at 10.45am for wreath laying ceremony. Refreshments served afterwards in the Millennium Centre.
Marley Hill
St Cuthbert’s Church at 10.15am for service and wreath-laying ceremony.
Metrocentre
Meet at Town Square (opposite House of Fraser) at 2.45pm for service and wreath-laying ceremony at 3pm. A choir will be singing from 2.30pm.
Rowlands Gill
Service at St Barnabas at 10.30am and at Strathmore Road Methodist Church at 10.45am. A service of Remembrance will be held at Rowlands Gill War Memorial at noon.
Ryton
Parish Communion at Holy Cross at 10am followed by Act of Remembrance and wreathlaying ceremony at the war memorial at 11am.
Swalwell
Holy Trinity Church, Hexham Old Road, for service at 9am followed by wreath-laying ceremony at 10am.
Whickham
Assemble at The Square, Front Street, Whickham, at 10.15am and proceed to the war memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony at 10.45am, followed by a service in St Mary’s Church.
Winlaton
St Paul’s Church at 9.30am for short service followed by wreath-laying ceremony at war memorial at 10.45am.
Monday, November 11 Low Fell
Boer War Memorial, Durham Road. Service will start at 10.45am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.
Saltwell Park
Organised by the Durham Light Infantry Association. Service will start at 10.45am at the DLI memorial.
NORTH TYNESIDE Sunday, November 10 Wallsend
Organisations will form up in Richardson Street at 10.30am to leave at 10.35am, arriving at the war memorial at Burns Closes for 10.55am. On conclusion of the service the parade will return back to the Town Hall, where a march past will take place.
North Shields
The parade will leave Tyne Met College on Hawkeys Lane at 10.30am, arriving at the war memorial at 10.50am for commencement of the service at 10.55am. The parade will reform and ‘march past’ before concluding at Tyne Met College.
Longbenton
The parade will assemble at 10.15am at the Ex-Servicemen’s Institute, Crescent Way North, Forest Hall, leaving in procession at 10.25am. The parade will march to the Cenotaph within the grounds of St Bartholomew’s Church, Station Road, Benton, where wreaths will be laid. The event will conclude with a service in the church.
Whitley Bay
The parade will assemble from 2.30pm in Victoria Terrace, Whitley Bay, leaving at 2.50pm to march in procession to the Cenotaph,
situated on The Links, where the service will take place at 3pm.
Sunday, November 10, 11.15am–2.30pm Spanish City Remembrance event
Music will be provided by local bands and singers including Bay Uke, Backworth Male Voice choir and Killingworth Community Choir.
Monday, November 11, Armistice Day Killingworth White Swan
An act of remembrance and two minutes’ silence will take place at the North Tyneside Post-1945 Jigsaw Memorial on November 11. The short service will be held at the White Swan Centre, Citadel East, Killingworth commencing at 11am.
Note: There will also be a number of other community-organised services and acts of remembrance tomorrow:
Backworth
The act of remembrance and wreath laying will commence at noon at the Backworth War
Memorial, Village Green, Backworth Lane (opposite the East Farm Mews junction).
Cullercoats
An act of remembrance will be conducted on conclusion of the main Sunday morning service at St George’s Church, Cullercoats. The service commences at 9.30am followed by wreath-laying by local ward councillors at the war memorial inside the church. Additionally, there will be smaller act of remembrance on November 11 at 11am by the memorial outside the church.
Monkseaton
A service of remembrance organised by St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, will commence at 10.50am outside the Ship Inn, Monkseaton.
Shiremoor
An act of remembrance and wreath laying will be conducted at 11am at the Shiremoor War Memorial, Earsdon Road, Shiremoor.
Tynemouth
The parade will assemble outside the Holy Saviour’s Parish Hall to march down Manor
Road to the memorial for commencement of the service at 11am.
West Allotment
An act of remembrance and wreath-laying will take place at 11am at the memorial on Benton Road.
Wideopen
The parade will form up outside St Columba’s Parish Church, Bridge Street, leaving at 10.45am for the Wideopen Memorial for commencement of the service at 11am.
Wallsend
Wallsend Memorial Hall: A service of remembrance will be held at 11am on Armistice Day outside the Memorial Hall on Frank Street in the site of the First World War memorial.
SOUTH TYNESIDE Sunday, November 10 South Shields – Westoe
10.15am – Main body of parade assembles in the Town Hall courtyard; 10.20am. Deputy Lord Lieutenant takes salute (accompanied by Civic party) from the steps of the Town Hall. 10.30am: Parade marches off via Westoe Road to the War Memorial. 10.55am: Service commences.
Jarrow
10.30am: Parade to assemble at the front of Jarrow Town Hall, Grange Road. 10.45am: Parade marches off via Grange Road to the war memorial in Station Street. 10.55am: Service commences.
At the end of the service, the Parade reforms and marches back to Jarrow Town Hall. Parade falls out at Jarrow Town Hall.
Hebburn
9.45am: Parade to assemble outside Hebburn Centra. 10am: Parade marches off from front of Hebburn Central, Glen Street, to St John’s

Cleadon
10.50am: Attendees move from All Saints Church, Cleadon Lane, to

West Park

10.35am: Parade marshal gives orders for those marching on Monkton Lane. 10.40am: Parade participants assemble on Monkton Lane (includes civic party consisting of the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress). 10.50am: Parade marches off. 10.55am: Parade arrives at war memorial and forms up under direction of parade marshal. 10.55am: Service commences
Mill Dam
10.30am: Gather at Mission to Seafarers Chapel. 10.50am: Assemble at the Merchant Navy Memorial Statue for service
SUNDERLAND Sunday, November 10
Service personnel and veterans will join the Mayor of Sunderland, Coun David Snowdon, at the annual Remembrance parade and service.
The public is advised to be on Burdon Road by 10.15am. Access to the disabled platform next to the war memorial will be available from 9.30am and parking in the Civic Centre car park will be available free of charge.
The parade will be led by the Royal Signals (Northern) Band and the Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band. Units taking part in this year’s parade include: 4th Regiment Royal Artillery (Sunderland’s adopted regiment), The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and crew members from Sunderland’s affiliated warship, HMS Anson.
Two field guns will be fired from the terrace in Mowbray Park to signal the start of the two-minute silence at 11 am.
The parade will end in a marchpast of veterans and serving members of Her Majesty’s Forces. This year there will be an extra screen on Borough Road – as well as the Burdon Road one – for public viewing.
DURHAM Saturday, November 9
Durham Cathedral’s Festival of
Remembrance – which will begin at 7pm – marks its 10th anniversary as it commemorates the 75-year anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Sunday, November 10
Durham Cathedral’s annual Remembrance Service will take place at 10.15am. Military representatives and dignitaries will be joined by serving soldiers. The service will be followed by wreath-laying and a formal parade

Ashington
Ashington’s Remembrance Day Parade and Service will take place on Sunday, November 10. Ashington’s parade will start at 10.30am from the Royal British Legion on North Seaton Road and go along Station Road to the Ashington Memorial Garden on Kenilworth Road.
The Remembrance Day service will take place in the Ashington Memorial Garden from 10.50am. Following the service the parade will return along the same route back to the Royal British Legion.
A Remembrance Day service will also take place at St. Andrew’s Church, Bothal, at 3pm.
Monday, November 11 Morpeth
The two minutes’ silence will commence at 11am in the Market Place.
