A MAN who suffered multiple injuries after falling into a quarry was wanted by police on prison recall, it has emerged.

It is understood police were in pursuit of a 24-year-old man in relation to a burglary when they tracked him down at Marsden Quarry.

He then slipped and fell, suffering back and wrist injuries at around 8.19am on November 2.

This resulted in a multi-agency response with paramedics, firefighters, coastguard and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade helping police.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue

Service dispatched five appliances to the scene, with crews sent from South Shields, Hebburn, Sunderland Central and Washington, as well as two officers.

Quarry workers were also drafted in to assist emergency services in evacuating the injured man.

Initial reports from the North East Ambulance Service said that the man’s injuries were life-threatening.

However, it has been confirmed that the man sustained non-lifethreatening injuries.

Paramedics took him to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

But it has now been revealed when officers read the man’s record they discovered he was wanted on prison recall by a different police force.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed a 24-year-old man has now been escorted to prison after being discharged from hospital.

However, the force was unable to confirm what offence the man had committed which led to him being on licence.
