Learning is fun in the outdoors

-

IN OUR SCHOOL we have a lesson each week called Forest Schools. Forest Schools is an educational, fantastic experience to learn about the great outdoors. We always have fun learning all about how to use tools to dig and plant, how to use natural materials to make things and we are soon going to have a fire pit which we can use to cook outdoors. We have made all sorts of lovely things and we sell some of them at the School Fayre to raise some money to buy new tools. It is great because you learn a variety of new skills that you would not learn at home.

We are doing a big project at the moment. We are using recycled plastic bottles to make a greenhouse ready for us to grow things in next Spring. Everyone is helping to collect the bottles at the moment.

We learn lots through playing games outside in the natural environment, which are brilliant fun, but we also have to learn how to respect the environment too. We have orienteering to do and lots of challenges to take part in. Mrs Judge takes us to the woods on the minibus sometimes and at other times we might go to Gibside, along by the river Tyne or in the natural areas of our school grounds. We wrap up warm and wear wellies because the weather might be good or it might be bad but we still go. This is one of the best things which everyone likes. 100% of our school pupils agree that Forest Schools is an experience that makes you want to stay outside and keep the lesson going.

We are still building new areas of our Forest School, so if you would like to help us make raised beds to grow lovely fruit and vegetables in, please come and see us. We would love you to help!

CHILDREN THROUGHOUT OUR SCHOOL do homework projects to try to make our learning fun.

Everyone has worked hard at home to make their own project, with parents and families helping them. Our most recent project was centred around our first term’s topic of ‘Travel Earth’.

The children chose their own country to research and create a fact-file or information source on that chosen place.
