Squaws take the sting out of the visiting Cobras

WHITLEY Bay Squaws beat Chelmsford Cobras 10-4 in the Womens Premier League at Hillheads.

It was only their second game of the season and followed their 4-4 draw against Sheffield Shadows on Tyneside a month ago.

Abigail Culshaw gave the Squaws the lead at 04.31, Stephanie Towns and Rachel Stockdale with assists.

Only 53 more seconds had passed before the lead was doubled when Sally Lewis and Culshaw assisted for Towns to strike.

It became 3-0 at 06.04 when Becky Kasner netted her first goal of the season, Danielle Turnbull picking up an assist. The Squaws had brought in a netminder in Jodie Alderson from Telford on loan - and she made several good saves before she was beaten twice late in the opening period as the deficit was reduced to 3-2.

Towns and Culshaw combined well to set up Lewis with her first goal of the campaign just 52 seconds into the second period.

Towns netted her second of the game following good work by Culshaw and Stockdale for a 4-2 lead six minutes later.

Chelmsford kept plugging away and were rewarded with their third goal at 31.21.

Savannah Sumner made it 6-3 to the Squaws with four minutes remaining in the second period.

The home side netted on the powerplay with Culshaw’s second of the game at 42.56 as Turnbull and Towns gained assists.

Four minutes later came another powerplay strike - Kasner’s second of the game - Culshaw and Towns adding to their personal points tally.

The Cobras added a fourth consolatio­n goal at 48.34 before Culshaw and Towns completed their hat-tricks at 50.53 and 51.17.
