The glory of Northumberland
THESE striking images are fresh interpretations of historic locations in the often wild and wonderful county of Northumberland.
We see Walltown Crags on Hadrian’s Wall; sunrise through the mist at Kielder Water; Holy Island causeway; Alnwick Castle; and the spectacular Tar Bar’l celebration which takes places in Allendale every New Year’s Eve.
They are just some of the 126 illustrations that appear in a new book called Northumberland In Photographs.
The book, published by Amberley, features the work of photographers Nathan Atkinson and Simon McCabe.
The pair told us: “Northumberland boasts a spectacular variety of landscapes from the Cheviot Hills in the North West of the county, high moorland, the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest, the spectacular geological feature of the Great Whin Sill to the North Sea coast and the Farne Islands.
“The heritage of its rich and diverse history can be seen throughout the county, from evidence of Roman ancestors at Hadrian’s Wall, early Christian sites, mediaeval castles, market towns, picturesque villages and harbour towns to its proud industrial heritage around the city of Newcastle.”
The book accordingly is wide in its scope and its chapters include By The Coast; At Night; In The Country; Rivers, Streams And Waterfalls; Wildlife; and Towns And Villages. ■■Northumberland in Photographs, by Nathan Atkinson and Simon McCabe, published by Amberley, is on sale now for £17.99.
