VIENNA BLOOD

BBC2, 9pm

YOU might have missed this crime thriller, based on the Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis, which slipped quietly into the schedules, without much fanfare, and which reaches its final episode this week.

But with some brilliant performances and a gorgeous setting, it’s worth going back to check it out on iPlayer.

Set in 1900s Vienna, it follows brilliant young British doctor Max (Matthew Beard) – who has a talent for forensics and understanding human behaviour – and his Austrian detective friend Oskar (Jurgen Maurer).

This week’s case is a family affair for Max, when his young nephew Daniel has a violent breakdown following the death of another cadet at the military academy the boys attend.

As the pair investigate, they discover traditions of sadistic and barbaric rituals, carefully kept hidden from the outside world.

THE YOUNG OFFENDERS

BBC1, 10.45pm/Wales 11.45pm THIS show – a comingof-age tale about a couple of loser teenage lads living without many prospects in Cork – is an absolute gem.

Conor (Alex Murphy) and his best pal/ foster brother Jock (Chris Walley), pictured, live with Conor’s mum Mairéad (Hilary Rose). A schoolgirl mum, now a widow, she does her best to keep them on the straight and narrow.

It’s a bit like This Country meets Derry Girls, with the heart and depth of Gavin & Stacey or The Royle Family.

It will regularly make you laugh, but don’t be surprised if it has you shedding a few tears too.

Tonight’s episode sees our heroes with those incredibly unfortunate haircuts decide to try their hands at being business owners, or “entrepioneers”.

They take on a second-hand chip van, with Mairéad providing the fish, but will they make any money?
