A RAINBOW painting created by pupils at a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school in North Tyneside now takes pride of place in the window of 10 Downing Street.

Pupils at Woodlawn School, in Whitley Bay, painted the rainbow picture to encourage people to stay home and stay safe to protect the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

But they were surprised to see their painting displayed in the window of Boris Johnson’s residence, just days after he returned to work after recovering from Covid-19.

Deputy headteacher, Claire Harrison Hoggarth, said: “We were absolutely chuffed to bits to see our rainbow painting appear in the window of 10 Downing Street.

“I imagine they must receive so many paintings, so we’re thrilled that our picture was chosen.”

The painting was created by three pupils, inspired by staff who noticed children’s paintings in the window of 10 Downing Street on the news.

And as Claire explains, the rainbow hearts symbolise the Government’s message to stay home, stay safe and protect the NHS.

While also highlighting the nation’s ‘rainbow of hope’ message which provokes happiness during difficult times.

She adds: “The feedback we have received from everyone is amazing.

“This has been a really uplifting moment in such a difficult time and it has helped to bring the school and the wider community together.”

The official Facebook account, UK Prime Minister, later posted a message of thanks to the school.

In a post, they said: “Thank you to the students of Woodlawn Special School in North Tyneside for these wonderful rainbow hearts.”

The post attracted hundreds of likes and shares, as well as comments commending the pupils for their work.

One person said: “Well done all the pupils and staff at Woodlawn Special School, they really are a fabulous school and family.”
