Carver: Tough call to make to released duo

FORMER COACH ADMITS HE WANTED TO SPEAK TO PLAYERS FACE TO FACE

JOHN Carver says he wanted to tell Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez face to face they had been released by Newcastle United.

However, with the season over and Carver’s own future in doubt, he contacted them as soon as he knew there would be no extension on the table for either player.

Both players had ended the season with no fresh contract talks at St James’ Park.

A final decision was eventually made once the Magpies had confirmed their top-flight status.

Taylor was unhappy with the situation at the time but said five years ago: “John Carver rang me and told me the club were not going to offer me a new deaI.

“I then had a chat with him, he is a good friend of mine.

“I have spent a lot of time with John in and out of the club.

“So I had a chat with him and then he asked me to pass the phone to Jonas, which was unbelievable.

“I cannot blame John because he is under instructions on what to do.

“I did not expect to be offered a new contract but it is not about that, you have to move on.”

Carver revealed later he found via a phone call his own time at Newcastle was over.

The Taylor

interview was a big story at the time but Carver (below) feels he did everything right.

He reflected: “They were on a coaching course and I knew they had been in lectures nine to five and was trying to get hold of them. “Eventually I got through to Ryan to tell him and then I asked if he was with Jonas.

“I would have preferred to tell them face to face. “What people don’t realise is I found out via phonecall about my future.

“I was in New York and I got a call and found out I was not staying.” Carver also felt Taylor knew that he was probably leaving the club. He added:

“Ryan’s house was packed and he was ready to go the week before the West Ham game. Players know what is happening.

“I go back to my time at the club as a player.

“I was living in digs with Paul Ferris and we received a letter delivered by recorded post.

“One said Paul was staying, the other said I was being released.

“I have never cried or moaned about it, sometimes circumstances are beyond your control.

“In 2014/15 we did not know what we were going to do because we did not know which division we would be in.

“If we had been relegated the club might have kept those players.

“It turned out to be a story but I found out the same way.”
