BEST OF THE REST

CODE 404

Sky One, 10pm

DI JOHN MAJOR (Daniel Mays) is in front of an AI ethics committee, presided over by a brilliantly biased ex-police commissioner played by Tracy-Ann Oberman.

As the panel debates whether the police force really should have blown the budget on rebooting Major, it’s fortunate that she’s always had a soft spot for him.

Back on the beat, Major and his partner Carver (Stephen Graham) are still trying to find out who killed him.

But Major would rather stalk his wife Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin), convinced she’s been seeing someone behind his back.

It results in one brilliant scene when Major, Carver and Kelly are all together, a love triangle stuck in a car. “It wasn’t behind your back, technically it was over your dead body,” corrects Kelly.

The plot is hardly relevant though. It’s the constant one-liners, Daniel Mays’ wonderfully gormless face and Stephen Graham’s deadpan delivery that makes this a comedy worth watching.

GREY’S ANATOMY

Sky Witness, 9pm

THERE’S no end to the drama inside and outside the emergency room as this soapy medical show continues its 16th season.

There’s a frisson of excitement for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) who has received a gift from best friend Cristina. The gift is new doctor Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), otherwise known as ‘McWidow’.

Anyone who has followed Grey’s right from the early days of Patrick Dempsey’s dear departed McDreamy will recognise how big a deal this is.

“That is a very well wrapped gift,” notes Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). Will Hayes turn Meredith’s head away from her relationship with Andrew?

Meanwhile, Amelia has had a slight counting problem with her pregnancy, meaning she has to break it to Link (Chris Carmack) that he might not be the daddy.

Elsewhere, Maggie has quit life as a surgeon after the death of a patient.

Watch out for Suits star Sarah Rafferty as a patient who mysteriously keeps spiking a fever.
