BEST OF THE REST
GARDENERS’ WORLD
BBC2, 9pm
THIS show returns with a joyous riot of colour, battling its own lockdown problems just like everything and everyone else.
With filming affected, Monty Don is at Longmeadow to take a horticultural romp through the archives to celebrate some of the most beloved summer flowers.
From delphiniums to clematis, irises, orchids and dahlias, expert growers share their passion, along with hints and tips.
Carol Klein visits a garden in Shropshire, where she discovers picture-perfect plant combinations.
Adam Frost travels to the Cotswolds to find out what happens when plants are brought together with imagination, and Nick Bailey guides us through the world of Britain’s favourite flower, the rose.
With a nation spending more time than ever in their homes and gardens, this new series is a timely arrival.
“Gardening is an enormously beneficial thing,” says Monty. “Being outside, getting fresh air, feeling the weather and the seasons and then celebrating the beauty you’re creating is good for your head!”
GOGGLEBOX
Channel 4, 9pm
THESE armchair critics have become even more of a comfort in lockdown, like old pals we know and love.
A weekly dose of laughter and light relief, they say what the entire nation is thinking. Last week they sobbed as they watched an NHS worker fight for her life on BBC’s Hospital and laughed in astonishment as Paul Hollywood ate a £350 strawberry.
The five minutes when they tore apart Boris Johnson’s confusing ‘Stay Alert’ announcement was hilarious.
Mary ended the instalment with a moment of amusing depth as she pondered: “People were nicer before they were corrupted by the internet… and the Beatles.”
We don’t know what they’ve been watching this week, but with a new Harry Redknapp series to scrutinise and plenty of Downing Street briefings to mock, we cannot wait.
