Tynesiders to launch new ladies’ team
GATESHEAD have announced they will field their first ever ladies’ team for the 2020/21 season – and they have already appointed a head coach.
Former East Durham Belles manager Michael Gray will take control with immediate effect, with the team also planning to play home games at the International Stadium’s 3G pitch.
Gray formed the Belles just over two years ago and has experience of the Durham FA Development Division through his time with the club.
Gateshead are currently awaiting Football Association approval to enter a team into the Durham FA Development Division.
Tynesiders chairman Neil Pinkerton said: “We want to give an opportunity for girls across the local community to get involved with Gateshead Football Club.
“We also wanted to offer a opportunity to a local coach to lead this new team and we have done that with Michael.
“They were the main factors behind this decision, and it is another key move in the next chapter of the football club’s development.
“We will be welcoming interest from any players looking for a new club and wanting to be part of our ladies’ setup in the coming weeks.
“We are very excited by the prospect of having a ladies’ team and we are looking forward to giving them our full support once the all-clear is given for football to return.”
New manager Gray said: “I am delighted to be a part of the history of this football club.
“This is a massive step for the club, and I want to be able to build a side that will make everyone proud.
“I am proud about growing the ladies’ game and I can’t wait to get started.”
