Tynemouth Market plans relaunch in a month

-

TYNEMOUTH’S weekly market plans to relaunch in July following months of cancelled events due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Outdoor food markets will be allowed to trade again from the start of June, while indoor (‘non-essential’) markets are permitted to reopen from June 15, as things stand.

While many markets have been shut to general customers, some, like Newcastle’s Grainger Market, have introduced delivery services and are open for essential food, with social distancing measures in place and many stalls shut.

Tynemouth’s weekend market was among the first to announce when it could reopen. Here is the latest state of play from some of the North East’s markets:

Tynemouth Market

If all goes to plan, Tynemouth’s weekend market will reopen inside the Metro station on Saturday, July 4, but with reduced stalls.

“We will keep you updated as to any changes as we get closer to the opening date,” the market said.

Quayside Sunday Market, Newcastle

Newcastle’s weekly outdoor market will not be back in June and has not agreed a relaunch date yet.

Grainger Market, Newcastle

Newcastle City Council says the Grainger is “still open for food and deliveries with certain entrances closed and directional signage in place”, as it has been throughout the lockdown. But many stalls, including the popular street food takeaways and cafes, remain closed. The council is looking into further reopening the market as part of its wider city centre post lockdown plan.

Jesmond Food Market, Newcastle

The twice-monthly Saturday market on Armstrong Bridge has not confirmed when it plans to reopen, but we understand discussions are under way.

Hexham Farmers Market

Events are postponed until further notice, but customers can order from the market and support its stall holders.

County Durham markets

Durham County Council has confirmed that the county’s markets will reopen from the beginning of the month. Crook will be the first to reopen on Tuesday, June 2. Consett market will be open on Thursday, June 4, Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6.
