Twist-ed logic of Labour’s stance
OH dear, why don’t our MPs just keep their mouths shut instead of making ill-informed statements on TV to try and gain political brownie points?
I refer to the appearance of Blaydon MP Liz Twist on BBC Look North on Thursday.
The report was regarding the proposed opening of the railway passenger line to Consett, one of the lines closed during the Beecham cuts.
We at Blyth could have the same thing happening to us and to be honest we cannot wait.
It will save on car pollution, roads will be less congested and you don’t have to look for parking spaces when you go shopping to Newcastle.
The carbon footprint for Blyth and Consett will also improve, all great news.
However, this did not suit Liz Twist and Labour, I suspect because they didn’t think of it.
On Look North she pontificated how it would be a bad idea mainly because these old lines are now country walks, these would disappear with the construction of the new lines – “we need more countryside, not less.”
It seems she is not aware, or has conveniently forgotten Labour policy in 2005 when deputy PM John Prescott said the green belts belonged to Labour and it intended to build on them. This started the wholesale sell-off of our countryside to the developers.
Now villages and towns seem to merge into one another.
According to Labour, green belts and countryside just don’t matter.
I suggest Liz Twist should familiarise herself with past Labour history before throwing rotten eggs at any Tory policy which betters people’s lives and the environment.
