Donations a huge boost for Colliers

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

ASHINGTON chairman Brian Shotton has issued an emotional ‘thank you’ after several kindhearted donations were made to the Northern League club.

With the coronavirus pandemic bringing on-field action to a halt, clubs across the non-league scene have come under mounting financial pressure.

The Colliers are one of a number of clubs to launch a crowdfunding page as they look to survive the crisis.

The club’s first-team squad donated over £550 and their reserve side followed suit with a £100 donation.

To further ease the pressure, supporters have snapped up 45 season tickets, despite not knowing if or when the 2020/21 campaign will get under way.

The funds raised on the crowdfunding page was stood at just over £1,600 on Friday evening and that total has swelled to over £2,000 with the additional donations.

Shotton took to the club’s website to reveal his gratitude for the way the club has been supported throughout the crisis.

He said: “As a club we have lost all income but the support we have received at such a critical time has been very much appreciated and my heartfelt thanks go out to everyone.

“That message is directed at supporters, players, sponsors and friends of the club.

“The revenue from the advanced sale of season tickets is truly valued whilst the donations from our first ream and reserve team have been superb – they are all a credit to the club.”

He added: “We are planning for as many eventualities as possible and it is heartening to know we have such strong support from within our club and the wider community.”
