Posh’s chief sees Toney in top flight
PETERBOROUGH United owner Darragh MacAnthony believes Newcastle United ‘should probably have never sold’ Ivan Toney – and thinks he could end up moving to a Premier League club this summer.
Posh forward Toney is League One’s top goal-scorer this season with 26 goals and has been linked with Middlesbrough, Celtic and Rangers.
Brentford were also reported to be interested in the striker in January and MacAnthony stressed Toney will not be available for a discount fee.
The 24-year-old has flourished since joining Peterborough in 2018 after years of being loaned out by Newcastle, for whom he played just four games in all competitions.
MacAnthony has revealed he promised Toney the club would sell him if they were not promoted.
Despite controversially missing out on a play-off place, the Peterborough owner has confirmed he will stick to his word – but only for the right price.
MacAnthony said: “He is different to a lot of Posh strikers.
“Usually we have strikers with a lot of pace but he has both, he has pace and physicality.
“He has been on loan to a lot of clubs.
“Newcastle should probably have never sold him to us but we spent a lot of money buying him he has been among the best players in League One - hopefully he will get his golden boot.
“We had several clubs trying to buy him in January and we promised Ivan if we were not in the Championship next season we would sell him. We don’t sell our players cheap, though.
“I can envisage he will go top two or three in the Championship or bottom-half Premier League clubs. Some of the Premier League clubs might not do a lot of European shopping and Ivan’s physicality suits the top level.”
