THE vast majority of passengers on the Metro had their faces covered on Monday in line with new rules, a transport boss has said.

From yesterday guidelines mean face coverings are compulsory for almost everyone using public transport - and those ignoring them could be hit with fines.

The new rule for buses, trains and ferries has been introduced to prevent the spread of coronavirus as lockdown eases and more people go back to work and schools and shops re-open.

Metro customer services director Huw Lewis estimated around 95% of passengers on the system had their faces covered.

He said: “A big thank you goes to all of our passengers who have been wearing face coverings on public transport from today.

“We estimate around 95% of people on the Metro system were wearing one, which is a great level of uptake already.”

Mr Lewis emphasised its a Government requirement that passengers cover their faces on public transport.

He added: “All passengers should be wearing a face covering.

“This is a new Government rule which has been introduced in the interests of public health.

“The face covering must cover the nose and the mouth and can be something as simple as a scarf, a snood or a bandanna tied snugly behind the head.

“This is a simple step we can all take in the national fight against coronavirus and it is something all people should stick to.”

However, passengers who don’t own face masks need not worry coverings can be as simple as a scarf, as long as it covers the nose and mouth. The Government has also published advice on how to make your own face covering online.
