STABBING victim Ryan Covell remains fighting for life in hospital.

It has now been a week since 22-year-old was left critically injured after he was stabbed ‘multiple’ times on Newcastle’s Westgate Road.

And as his fight for life continues, Ryan’s mum, Diane, has told the Chronicle of her family’s devastation.

She said: “It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Me and his siblings are devastated, I’m heartbroken.

“No one will ever understand what it is like until it happens to them, which I hope it never does because it’s the most hurtful thing any parent could go through.

“Your whole world feels like it’s just crumbled around you.”

Emergency services were called to Westgate Road at around 12.40am last Monday.

Ryan, who is from North Tyneside, was found seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Dean Stewart, 25, of Westgate Road, has since appeared in court accused of attempted murder.

On Tuesday North Tyneside Magistrates Court was told Ryan had suffered stab wounds to his neck and liver and was given a “life-saving” emergency blood transfusion at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Leslie Burgess, prosecuting, said the alleged attack happened at the Tyneside Foyer, which provides accommodation for disadvantaged young adults, at around 12.30am.

Ms Burgess added: “He is currently in an induced coma having sustained multiple stab wounds, causing a laceration to the liver and a laceration to the carotid artery.

“He needed an emergency blood transfusion by paramedics, who saved his life.

“He then had emergency surgery and is in a critical condition in an induced coma.”

Stewart, 25, of Westgate Road, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and nationality, during the hearing and the case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court.

Remanding Stewart into custody, District Judge Paul Currer told him: “Given the nature of the charge you face, you will be dealt with by the crown court.

“You will next appear at Newcastle

Crown Court on July 14 at 10am.”

Diane said she is still struggling to comprehend how this could have happened to her ‘gentle’ son.

“No one deserves what’s happened to him,” she continued. “He’s well liked and loved by a lot of people.

“They can’t believe what’s happened. Ryan would speak to anyone and everyone he got on with most people so I can’t understand why this has happened to him.

“He would go out his way to help anyone hes like a big friendly giant with a heart of gold.

“He’s well liked. Everyone knows him and know what he’s like.”

A 27-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman also arrested in connection with the incident have since been released on bail.

Police remained at the scene throughout the day on Monday and specialist search teams could be seen carrying out investigations.
