Toon won’t get carried away – star

-

MATT Ritchie insists Newcastle’s players won’t be getting carried away after an impressive win against Sheffield United.

The Magpies moved within two points of 10th-placed Arsenal with Sunday’s 3-0 win over the Blades behind closed doors at St James’ Park on Sunday.

United could also be in the FA Cup semi-finals if they are able to defeat holders Manchester City on home turf on Sunday.

After a dreadful start to the season and with the club more focused on avoiding relegation than anything this season, the Magpies could end the campaign in style if they can produce more displays like last Sunday’s.

But while Newcastle will be full of confidence ahead of the visit of Aston Villa tomorrow and a huge FA Cup quarter-final just days away, the usually animated Ritchie is staying calm.

“We can’t afford to look too far ahead but we have given ourselves a big chance to have a really good season,” the ex-Bournemouth winger said.

“That’s a great start for us but let’s not jump the gun. We have to keep our feet on the ground, One win is a platform, nothing more.

“But what is really positive is that after lockdown, we have risen to the challenge, winning the game 3-0 and playing well.

“But we know how competitive this game is so not for one minute will myself or any of the lads get carried away.

“Yes, we’ve scored three goals and kept a clean sheet again, which is very pleasing, but there are a lot of big games coming up. Villa are fighting for their lives so that will be tough and then we have a big home quarter-final.

“Yes, we could be in the top half and the semi-finals of the Cup by next week but it’s dangerous to look too far ahead, it’s an opportunity, nothing else, it is ifs and maybes and if you spend too much time thinking of them, you can come unstuck.”
