NEWCASTLE United returned from lockdown in the Premier League to record an impressive 3-0 win over Sheffield United at St James’ Park.

True, it was a crying shame no fans were able to see this resounding victory – but at least it means when they return to their seats they will be watching Premier League football again.

Whether they will be doing so under a new owner remains to be seen but some positive noises are emerging from Saudi Arabia and sources close to the Amanda Staveley camp say they have done everything asked of them to make their takeover a reality – it is now solely down to the Premier League to say yes or no.

On a strange day at St James’ Park, this is what we observed from the top of the Milburn Stand.

Victory over Aston Villa tomorrow night would all but confirm their place in the top flight next season.

A top-10 place is still up for grabs and while some high-profile names – such as Mauricio Pochettino, Max Allegri, and Benitez – have been linked with United in recent times, it may be harsh to change manager without giving Bruce a chance. regardless of who will be running it.

Fans were told to stay away from St James’ Park but in Sean and Matty Longstaff there were two youngsters who watched Newcastle from the Gallowgate End as kids.

Matty has been in contract talks with Newcastle in recent weeks and, despite talk of new owners, it is the current regime that is trying to persuade him to stay.

Both Matty and Sean, who will soon need to start talks over a new contract himself, watched from the stands just yards from Charnley.

If both brothers are fit they could end up with starring roles in the last eight games. They were delighted to see Newcastle romp to victory and will surely want to be part of things again soon.

The Brazilian striker has endured tough nights this season after struggling to settle at Newcastle following his £40million move from Hoffenheim.

However, after getting in on the act with his first Premier League goal at St James’ he made his way from the changing area with Miguel Almiron and Javier Manquillo.

There have been times when Joelinton trudged out of the ground alone but it was good to see him enjoying the moment.

His overall performance deserved a round of applause – if only there had been fans there to enjoy it with him.

Joelinton also carried out his media duties in English after the game and without the aid of a translator, suggesting he is starting to settle on Tyneside.
