Diamonds saddened as season axed

-

TAPES will not go up at Brough Park this season after speedway’s governing body ruled out any resumption of league action.

The British Speedway Promoters’ Association (BSPA) took the decision after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that October could be a potential starting date for allowing fans back into sports stadia.

The BSPA claims that does not offer enough time for a full league season to be staged. However, it is hoped action will resume at grassroots level and clubs have been invited to apply to their local council to stage some form of racing before the end of October.

The decision to scrap the season was met with sadness by Newcastle Diamonds’ management team headed by Rob Grant and Dave Tattum.

In a statement they said: “All the management at Newcastle Speedway are deeply disappointed for all our riders, sponsors, and most importantly our loyal band of supporters.

“It is a decision which was inevitable but promoters up and down the country have worked tirelessly to get the Government go-ahead with ample time to run a league campaign, and none more so than us.

“The winter takeover injected so much positivity into the club and there was a great feeling of 2020 being a successful and enjoyable season.

“This is something we believe will carry on into 2021 and we would like to take the same team forward and continue in 2021 in the same fashion we intended this season.”

The statement added: “We would like to remind all our season ticket holders their season tickets can be used in 2021.

“We have informed all our sponsors of the news and are delighted they all want to stay involved by rolling their various sponsorship packages over to next year.”
