TYNEDALE Sports Club has been bowled over by the popularity of its junior cricket coaching sessions since they resumed after the lockdown.

The Hexham-based club runs multiple junior teams - including an under-13 Terriers squad.

The club’s Rod Wallace said: “We started training as soon as the ECB allowed us.

“We had 21 kids signed up in a few days and now run two two-hour weekly training sessions.

“We have now started games on a Sunday morning against other clubs and we also play weekly internal games.

“Our aim is to keep the kids interested in cricket for as long as possible.

“We also want to give them an opportunity to have fun learning to play cricket in a safe environment with their friends.”

RHYOPE only just secured victory at home to Peterlee in the latest round of Division Three matches.

The hosts won the toss and batted first but were pegged back by the early loss of David Kirtley.

Kirtley’s opening partner Ricki Mendonca batted fluently, however, and managed a run-a-ball 44 which propelled his side to 84-4 from their allotted 15 overs.

It looked like the result was only heading one way when Ryhope reduced their visitors to 10-3 - but a valiant effort from Sam Garraghan (45 not out) steered his side to within just two runs of victory.

Philadelphia edged home by just seven runs against Felling.

The County Durham youngsters lost the toss, were asked to bat first and were bowled out for 65 inside 19 overs.

Max Lowe picked up figures of 2-2 from just 1.2 overs and there were also two wickets apiece for Lewis

Cairns, Ben Forster, Torvin Warbuton and Calum Wright.

In reply, Felling struggled to get going and were restricted to 58-6 from their 20 overs.

■ IN the Northumberland Junior Cricket League Under-15 Division, another close contest was played out between Tynedale and South Northumberland.

batsman William Marrow (44) top-scoring before he was dismissed by Freya Rook, who claimed excellent figures of 3-9.

In response, Adam Helsby retired with an excellent 50 not out from just 32 balls but his side fell at the last hurdle as they finished on 120-5.

In the Durham League, Blaydon Under-15s clinched a six- wicket triumph over Leadgate.

Leadgate batted first and managed

a respectable 100-4 from their innings, James Moore (50 not out) the only batsman to record double figures.

In response, Joe Bullerwell ensured the run chase got off to a positive start before he was bowled by Callum Searle for 37.

Searle (3-14) went on to claim two more wickets or - but it was in vain as Blaydon knocked off their required total in the 17th over.
