Walker thug in nasty attack
STORE GUARD IS PUNCHED AS MAN GETS INVOLVED IN ALTERCATION
A THUG punched a supermarket security worker and dug his fingernails into his face during a “nasty” assault.
Barry Davies lost his temper for no apparent reason when he became involved in an altercation between the Asda worker and a suspected shoplifter.
The 41-year-old then lunged towards the victim and later hit him in the back, dug his fingernails into his face and scratched the side of his head, a court heard.
Still refusing to calm down, Davies then threatened to bite the shop worker as police were called.
Davies, of Merlay Hall, Walker, in Newcastle, was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of assault by beating.
Rachael Glover, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, said it was on March 19 this year Davies entered the Asda store in Byker and became involved in an altercation between the security guard and a female shoplifter.
She added: “The defendant became aggressive and lunged towards the injured party, who then took him to the holding room.
“While in there, the defendant punched the security guard in the back, dug his fingernails into his face and scratched the side of his head. He then said: “I will bite you.”
In a statement read to the court, the victim said: “I don’t come to work to be assaulted – it is not part of my job description.”
Alanna Wesencraft, defending, said Davies had stayed out of trouble since September 2019 and was apologetic for his behaviour.
She said: “He has moved on in terms of his history.
“He had difficulties in the past with drugs but is now drug free.”
Ordering him to pay £150 compensation and banning him from the Byker branch of Asda for 12 months, District Judge Paul Currer said: “You involved yourself in something you need not have become involved in
“You have a history of shoplifting yourself.
“You become aggressive and the assault is unnecessary, nasty and aggressive.”
At The Chronicle we are calling for tougher sentences for people convicted of assaulting emergency service workers.
