Willems: I want to return to Magpies

-

JETRO Willems has revealed he wants to return to Newcastle United.

The Dutchman has just one year left on his deal with Eintracht Frankfurt but would be allowed to leave this summer.

After suffering a cruciate ligament rupture in January, the former PSV Eindhoven star’s loan spell ended early on Tyneside.

However, he has fought back to fitness and is close to full contact training again.

The Magpies are in the hunt for a left-back and are waiting to see where things stand with loanee Danny Rose at Spurs – but club chiefs are monitoring Willems’ progress.

When asked if he was open to a return to United, Willems said: “Of course. It was sad it ended like it did. I feel like I am not done yet.

“So we will see, you never know what can happen and it would be great to be back and show everyone at St James’ Park what I can do.”

Reflecting on his current fitness levels, Willems went on: “It is going well and progressing every week and every day so I am busy with it. I am back on the pitch and doing almost everything. Soon I will be back with the team.”

He added: “I had a great time [at Newcastle] and I was feeling great, you could see that on the pitch.

“I felt like a new boy. The support and confidence they gave me, people at the club and the coach, I had a great time – it is sad that it ended like that.

“It was hard but things happen for a reason but I am positive – the most important thing is I want to be back on the pitch and show them I am back.”
